Experience and Background

As an instrumental music teacher in the New York City Public Schools, Kara E. Dean has experience teaching orchestra, beginning strings, and general music to both high school and elementary students. As a private violin teacher, she taught in North Carolina and New York for over 10 years. In addition to teaching and learning, she enjoys fiddling, performing in orchestras, and playing her violin in the community. She is an active choir member at Trinity Episcopal Church in Arrington, VA.

Dr. Dean has presented papers at the 28th International Society for Music Education World Conference in Bologna, Italy and the VMEA In-Service Meeting in 2013 to name a few. Her research interests include stringed instrument pedagogy for private studio and public school settings, lifelong learning in music, and music curriculum design and implementation.

Dr. Dean lives in Lynchburg with her husband Dr. Adam W. Dean and their dog Greeley. They enjoy cooking, hiking, and canoeing together.
